Paul Stopforth

In Stopforth's work the dialogue between permanence and impermanence plays itself out in his careful attention to materiality. It is this alternation between sturdiness and fragility, materiality and decay, between permanence and transience that endows his images with the quality of a "trace" as Jaques Derrida imagined the concept, always in restless movement, nervously oscillating between here and there. He has long worked in the space between the material and the spiritual, imaging finitude and mortality.
